Physicians crown their World Champion

Every four years professional football national teams lead by The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) seek their World Cup Champion, however, also physicians’ football national teams from around the world come together annually to crown their Champion. Since 2006, national teams made up of physicians and medical professionals meet to determine the winner of the ’World Medical Football Championship’ aka ’Morell Cup’, named after its founder Dr. Ferran Morell.

In the early days of the WMFC in the 90ies, regional competitions were held in and around Barcelona amongst local selections, until the first international event was held in 2006. Since then, the tournament grew to a major sport event that, in 2017, will host presumably up to 20 Nations from 5 continents in Leogang, Austria.

Traditionally, participants also take advantage of the local recreational opportunities with their families, while competing in the tournament. Around 1.000 guests are expected to attend the WMFC 2017 events and will create a unique atmosphere on and off the four football pitches during this weeklong tournament.

Check out all locations – pitches, congress, ceremonies, etc. – on our WMFC map.

Participants 2006 – 2017

major sport event

In order to facilitate the continued active participation of those football-aficionados who initiated or played the early editions of the tournament, a small-sided football tournament was established and first held in 2014 in Natal (Brazil) as part of the WMFC. This ‘Clemens Vogel Cup‘ is for players over 45 years of age and has developed into a corner stone of the WMFC family. All nations participating in the ’Ferran Morell Cup’ (full pitch, main event) are able to enter ’Clemens Vogel Cup’. The tournament bracket for the WMFC 2017 in Leogang is set for 20 teams (‘MC’) and 13 teams (‘VC’), resulting in 33 participating teams and a total of nearly 100 matches to be played. Both tournaments kick off with a group stage (three games per team) prior to the knock out rounds. All final ranks of each team will be determined, which guarantees each team six matches in as many days.

Since its inception, 23 different nations have participated in the World Medical Football Championship, with increased numbers in recent years. Teams can nominate up to 40 players (25 for ‘MC’, 15 for ‘VC’); the group draw will be held during the Opening Ceremony in the evening prior to the first match day. Another key highlight of this world cup is the Closing and Victory Ceremony directly following the Final.
